“I felt at home after seeing “The Mughal princess” as being from the same “city” Agra” the princess belongs to! Your name on the artist ‘s list brought me here today to see the “studio Tour” at Boynton House. Thanks for being here and showing the world the beautiful art form of a faraway place called India.”
“I Love your intricate & expressive art. So beautiful.”

Hello, I am Anu Kalra. The abundant natural beauty of Canada, with its stark contrasts and brilliant, vibrant colours, is what inspires me to paint and draw. As an artist, I am deeply inspired by the rich history and tradition of Indian miniature painting. I strive to honor this art form while also exploring new ways to interpret its techniques and motifs. My work is characterized by intricate details, vibrant colors, and a focus on storytelling. Each piece is a labour of love, I use a variety of materials and techniques, including acrylic paints, gouache, gold leaf, and fine brushes, to create works that are both visually appealing and meaningful.
Through my art, I hope to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity in the viewer, as well as a connection to the cultural heritage that inspired it. Whether depicting mythological scenes or everyday life, my paintings invite the viewer to step into a world that is both familiar and exotic, ancient and modern with a “Then and Now” twist. Ultimately, my goal is to create art that is not only visually stunning, but also thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. Through my work, I hope to invite viewers into a world of beauty and complexity, where ancient traditions and modern realities coexist in harmony.
My contemporary paintings are land and seascapes reflecting all seasons, and vibrant colours. I maintain the graphic influence in my work which is a reflection of my training and experience. The abundant natural beauty of Canada, with its stark contrasts and brilliant, vibrant colours, is what inspires me to paint my landscapes and abstract art. I am captivated by the different moods that colours evoke. As I see the world, humanity and colour are prominent. My love of life and my appreciation of what is beautiful is reflected in my art and my feelings for my subjects, colours and materials is coalesced in my paintings.
I have a BFA in Graphic Design from The College of Art, Delhi, India and studied at George Brown College. I worked as a graphic designer and Art Director for Discovery Magazine. I have held solo exhibitions and participated in TOAF2019 -23 and the Artist network 2022 – 2023 Richmond Hill Studio Tours and Art Fairs 2014-2022. I received an Honorable Mention Painting Award at TOAF 23.
“There appear to be a lot of cultural influences in Anu Kalra’s work, at get pulled back in time like I’ve just visited the Aga Khan Museum and then pushed back into the present with modern references with Indian and Persian influences. There is a strong sense of community, a mix of sublime and spiritual. The artist also has incorporated forces of minimalism and some abstraction within the details of the work that reminds me of the more modern Super flat movement. There is balance in her work, a linear perspective, while the artist looks to create a playful sense of people and intersecting identities. Kalra’s reminds me of what’s missing in large institutions such as the AGO’s collections.”

Not Fragile is a multidisciplinary collection that features fifteen artists whose works draw upon the themes of place, identity, tradition, and loss. There is a vulnerability shared through all the pieces in the collection, which is exemplified either through the subject matter or the use of materials. Moreover, the work represents the resilience of the artists, who have chosen to share their deeply personal experiences with us.

This collection of pieces was inspired by my journey of coming out of grief. I spent the last few years dulled by my own mental health and unable to snap out of it. It was because of art and nature that I was able to heal and find my way back to myself. From the simple and important reminder that Joejene C. Santos shows in “I Am Alive”, to the paintings of Anu Karla (reminiscent of my drag persona), every piece reflects a small part of my healing and the importance of holding on to what makes life special.

Something bursts through us. Ideas are plunked into our heads from out of nowhere. The most profound need to make something into life takes over. The act of creating something is a necessity or a message or a channel from us—but really from something outside of us coming through.
I feel things when I see creative acts. This free-flowing colourful collection of creativity exudes this spirit that I describe above. I love all of these works personally and emotionally they speak to me.
That is what art does. It speaks to parts of ourselves that don’t always have the words.
